ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract after losing Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup rights
ITV have lost rights to the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup
They will not renew the contracts of Andy Townsend and Matt Smith
Townsend has worked as a pundit on ITV for nearly 15 years

ITV Sport, having lost their FA Cup and live Champions League and Europa League rights, will not be renewing the contracts of pundit Andy Townsend and presenter Matt Smith at the end of the season.
The decision was mutual with Townsend, one of the best operators in the difficult role of co-commentator.
He wants to work on live football and has offers from other international broadcasters.
nice one

Thanks Links.

There soon won't be any 'free' football left on TV - at all!

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Was you.

You arguement is basically that all pundits/journo's etc are on a level and it's just about opinions and arguing those opinions, etc.

But let me ask you a question, and try to give a simple answer. Who do you think understands the game of football more, Gary Neville or Andy Townsend?

Which is what I was saying...

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Dunno, but it's not for their knowledge and insights. If they were any good they would be in coaching or management.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
If they're that good, why aren't they sitting in Townsend's chair? Why is it only ex-players that are employed as matchday pundits?

Private Dancer 6:48 Fri Jan 9
Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
That's right, they are there simply because they are ex-players.

Read a detailed article by someone like Samuel or Ashton, spelling and grammar apart, ask yourself if Andy Townsend would be able to deliver the same. Not a chance. But they would comfortably be able to do Townsend's job.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Not at all.

Just look on here for the different ways that people at a game afterwards interpret what they saw. How often do you read people asking if someone else was watching the same game? And look at the player ratings given by newspapers - they always differ wildly.

To be honest, I'm really not sure that the pundits' actual opinions really matters that much. What matters is how they support their arguments, and the credibility they have from their playing days. Which is probably why the likes of you and me will never be employed as a Sky TV pundit (although I did have a promising career as goalkeeper between the ages of seven and 14).

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Knowledge is understanding what is happening on the field of play, rather than jsust seeing 22 blokes running around. That's one example.

I don't know where you are going with this. With your theory, then you may as well just employ anybody to sit there and give an opinion.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Knowledge, what is knowledge?

In the end, it's all just opinion and interpretation, and what separates those are arguments and passion.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Yes he knows his stuff, I said he doesn't have a deep understanding of the game. He just pretty much tells you what you have already seen and what to expect. I don't really mind him as he does seem to have a genuine passion for the game, but yea a bit overbearing.

When you listen to some journos like Ashton, Barclay, Samuel, etc, their knowledge of the game far far outweighs the likes of Townsends. it's not even close.

Coffee 5:54 Fri Jan 9
Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Not sure about that, Private. He does know his stuff, but he's an overbearing sod and tends to go on a bit.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
Townsend also works a lot for PLTV which only goes out overseas, I have the 'pleasure' of his company on a regular basis. That said, I don't think he's any worse than most of them. At least he is easy on the ear and concise, but he doesn't have a deep understanding of the game and like most of these 'pundits' you could replace them with any knowledgeable fan of the street and probably not notice any difference.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
I see that ITV were in talks with BT a few months back with a view to buying some games for terrestrial broadcast, but seeing as they're clearing out their commentators it looks as though they've given up.
BT have bid such massive sums for PL and CL live rights that it goes without saying that their customers will pay a very high price for such recklessness - whether you watch the football or not. Boycott BT.
Let's just hope ITV don't poach the MOTD slots. If they do then the beeb might as well give up on sport.

Ha ha
Townsend's shameless cheerleading for teams like Chelsea in Champions league games also gets my GOAT.
Every contact in the area is a Chelsea pen and a horrific lunge by Terry is the foreign Johnny making a meal of it and there isn't anything wrong with that tackle, Clive.

Re: ITV will not renew Andy Townsend's contract
but we will miss such gems of incisive knowledge as....
“I’m just wondering there Clive, could he have taken a touch, possibly?” Or "Listen. I’m just thinking there, Clive, that he should really be looking to hit that one first time.”
